Description: Different species of monkeys have specialized social structures. The Titi monkeys live in monogamous groups that include a “married couple” and their kids. They are pretty elusive and hard to observe in the wild, but one of the characteristics they are known for is twining their tails together. I think that is so sweet! It has the same feeling to me as holding hands. The other very wonderful thing about these monkeys is that the dad plays a large role in caring for the young. The monkeys do a lot of mutual grooming, usually with the tails twined. Other members in their little troop also spend time grooming each other, especially just before bedtime, where they sleep on a bough devoted to this purpose. The youngest monkey is groomed especially by the father. In fact, some observation shows that the father Titi monkeys spend more time caring for the infants than the mothers do. Wow, a stay at home monkey dad! Obviously only the mom can feed the little ones, but the dad is the one who protects them from rain by shielding the baby with his body, and just generally spends more time with it until it’s old enough to take care of itself.
