Description: Just so a giraffe can lower his head on that enormous neck without blacking out, he has a series of valves in the venous system of the neck. Such complex solutions were necessary for this particular body design. And if you like unique body designs, you might appreciate the marsupial styling of my silver possum pin or other examples of wonderful wildlife pins in silver. Giraffes are inhabitants of the open woods and grasslands of Africa to the south of the Sahara desert. They are found in the presence of acacia, myrrh and open myrobalan woodlands. Acacia plants have horns that the giraffe has to navigate in order to consume, which he manages to do quite efficiently by the way the leaves are gathered by the 18” long tongue, compressed and swallowed (horns and all!). It seems like a lot of work for something that can’t taste that good! Or maybe it is delicious to him- I certainly hope so after all the work of collecting it. They do eat some other things as well, such as vines and herbs. And when the season is right, they can supplement all that sharp stuff with flowers and fruit. During the dry season giraffes feed more by the local streams and rivers that, since there’s a water source, continue to have new green material growing along them all year. That’s why giraffes aren’t limited to just one season in which to produce their young. They have a source of good nutrition all year round. I’ve always wanted to create a giraffe pin with the whole body, so when I started to create my designs allowing me to cast in sterling silver, I was able to achieve this mini-dream.
