Description: To regulate its body temperature, the bearded lizard has developed its own system. Of course they have no sweat glands, so they have to work around that “easy fix” that we humans have for keeping cool.
Early in the morning, before the air warms up, the bearded dragon exposes the back to the sun so as much body surface as possible receives the benefit of the sun’s warming rays. Now the lizard can become active and he starts to hunt. When it gets too hot, around 104 degrees Fahrenheit, they look for shade somewhere.
Later on the air cools off and the ground is retaining heat from the sun. The lizard comes out now and faces the sun to take in just a small amount of heat. It keeps its tail high and stands on the lizard equivalent of tip toes so the minimum amount of its body is touching the hot ground.
At the end of the day it basks again in the sun, getting as much warmth as possible by turning its back to the rays.
I love reptiles, and would probably have a house full if I only had the time to take care of them. I find them beautiful and their habits fascinating.
For my fellow reptile loving sisters out there in the world, I’d suggest wearing this with a pair of my sterling silver dangling bearded dragon earrings. This sterling silver bearded dragon pin would make a beautiful gift for the bearded dragon loving lady!
