Description: Highland cattle were registered as a breed in 1884- the very first registered cattle. One endearing thing about this breed is that as a group they are known as a fold, not a herd.  Anyone interested in farm animals may also like to peruse my other silver pins of farm animals. They are a hardy breed, surviving well even on brush- plants that the more pampered domestic cattle won’t deign to touch.  If the pasture is poor and the land is rough, the Highland cow is a good choice. They seem like an a very old breed to me, and indeed the Highland cow was used in combination with another breed to recreate the ancient cattle known as the auroch in the early first part of the last century, Plus they’re so adorable! To me they look like a gigantic stuffed animal. It’s hard to tell what their temperament is like from a photograph, but it’s hard to picture them being particularly fierce.  Another particularly cute farm animal can be found in my sterling sheep pin. The Highland cow makes a great mom. They have such a strong mothering instinct that very few calves are lost to predators. If they share a pasture with sheep, the lambs are also safer. The calves generally are strong and grow rapidly. I don’t expect this sterling silver Highland cow pin- pendant will ever be extraordinarily popular- but I had fun designing it and hope it brings pleasure to the rare owner or breeder of this delightful farm animal.
