Description: Elephants are completely vegetarian animals. They eat just about all the parts of the plants, from foliage to fruit to branches. Talk about an iron stomach! They gather up the matter with their trunks and put it right in the mouth. I'm not sure how the subject of my beautiful rhino pin pendant in sterling silver compares but I assume they have a smaller appetite. An area can really be denuded by too many elephants. They even push over trees with their heads to get to the foliage on the top. It can be problematic in a park setting where the elephants are protected because the population increases so much there is danger of starvation when all the plant life is consumed. If they were free to roam, they’d just move to another area. That way the plants can recover while the elephants are elsewhere. Elephants communicate with each other by sound that they create deep within their bodies, sort of the opposite of the high pitched sounds of the echolocating bats and others. It is a very deep rumbling sound, some of which is too low in tone to be heard by anyone other than another elephant. This sound can carry quite a distance. Elephants also trumpet, of course. This is one of their most recognizable characteristics. It’s an amazing and unforgettable sound and no other animal can make one like it.
