Description: It is a good sized pin-pendant with quite a bit of sterling silver in his detailed armor. I think armadillos are such unusual, interesting mammals- I couldn’t wait to design one.
Armadillos are not known for their bravery. When pursued, their first line of defense is to scurry down their closest burrow with all speed. That may be why they keep a bunch of these holes all around their territory. Always a hole close at hand just in case.
Armadillos are related to sloths and anteaters, even though there isn’t much resemblance superficially. I think it all goes back to the teeth, which scientists seem to go by a lot when placing animals in particular categories.
The armor consists of bands of the horny plate, with hair sticking out in between the various bands and also from under the bottom of the shell and on the legs. There is only one in the family that can roll itself into a perfect ball, and that is the three banded armadillo of Argentine. It even snaps the shell shut.
Because of their armor, armadillos are heavy animals. I guess that’s what lets them walk across bodies of water.
