Description: The very earliest lagomorphs (the family that rabbits and hares belong to) appeared about 50 million years ago. Although the first of its kind originated in Asia, the family developed mostly in North America.
They are a diverse family and call places all over the globe home. This includes the arctic and snowshoe hares as well as the tropical forest where the South American forest rabbit lives. There are rabbits that live in the swamps as well.
Rabbits are, much to the chagrin of their admirers, an important source of food for many mammals and birds. But this is a good thing. They not only keep other important animals from starving, but predation tends to increase the number of the prey so they keep reproducing as well.
Desert rabbits such as the black tailed Jack Rabbit have those gigantic ears that help them regulate the flow of blood which controls how much heat is lost depending on the outside temperature. They are mostly active at night. I never thought about the idea of a nocturnal rabbit. It’s amazing what I pick up about these animals with a little study.
If you enjoy a jewelry that’s a bit on the unusual side, my sterling silver facing bunny pin pendant could be something to look at and more will be appearing soon at sterling silver small pet pin pendant gifts.
