Description: The Quarter horse is an old breed, and the most popular of all American horses. The breed’s ancestry includes the horses brought by the Spanish conquistadores. These were, for the most part Arabian, Andalusian and Barb. Later they were crossed with early Thoroughbreds. It is quite amazing how detailed this early information is! These facts are from the 17th century in a pretty wild and largely uninhabited country at the time, yet information like breed type and years when they arrived seems to be carefully recorded. There is one date given, 1611, when the first English horses were imported. They were known as running horses and were the forefathers (and foremothers, for that matter) of the English Thoroughbred. As early as 1620 they were being bred for speed. Imagine, horse races in the 1600s in North America! I had no idea. Of course the races were quite short, but even then prizes of money were being offered for especially fleet footed horses. This, then, is the beginning of the Quarter horse, and the early interest in the breed seems to be more related to its speed than anything else. I hope you find it attractive.
