Description: When I first designed this piece of horse jewelry it was with the English horse riding style of braiding the mane in mind. I thought to create a horse that reflected this style. I have given this horse the title of “English,” although it appears that there are different breeds of horses where the manes are braided, especially before certain types of competition. I realize I’m showing my ignorance here, but from the layman’s perspective there do seem to be several riding styles where the braided mane is favored. The Trakehner horse, which originated in what is now Lithuania (where my husband’s family came from, incidentally) seems to wear the mane in this style for some competitive riding events. This is a beautiful horse, tough and with the stamina that can be traced back to an ancestry consisting of Mongolian ponies and other local breeds of ancient extraction. Later this horse was bred to be a working horse in many different guises, including working the land and for warriors to ride. Nearly 500 years later the breed was further developed and the horse was bred with some Arab and other types which eventually led to the elegant horse of today.
