When I lived in the country in Northern California, we had wild turkeys visiting our property on a regular basis. In the spring time the moms and their little broods would wander through, pecking at this or that in our overgrown grass. The young ones stayed with their mother until they were fairly large.

I can understand why. They were such good parents- guiding the fledglings along and even hunkering down and spreading out their wings to protect them during
spring rains.

Sometimes a Tom would show up. This was during the mating season, so he would gobble like mad and strut his stuff around. One especially amusing incident occurred when a couple of male turkeys showed up on our tiny concrete front porch. One of them was a gangly “adolescent” and the other a proud adult.

Well, the adult was as puffed up as I’ve ever seen a turkey, and that little scraggly young Tom was doing his best to match his “hero”. It really tickled me. And we had a front row seat to this fine example of male macho-matching.
