Description: One of my favorite sheltie stories I’ve read is that in the Shetland Isles when the grazing was limited either through over grazing or just poor land, the farmers took the shelties and the sheep to a smaller island devoid of people where the sheep could graze to their heart’s content. The sheep and the dogs stayed on the island by themselves, and the farmer completely trusted the dogs to take care of them without any human intervention. Another responsibility of the sheltie was protecting the farmer’s crops from the hungry sheep that would head for them instead of the less appealing places where they were normally forced to graze. That had to be one busy little dog back then! Back in the 1800s shelties were already becoming popular as companion dogs. When the British Navy came to the islands some of the sailors found them so appealing that they bought some of the beautiful little dogs to take home. Now the sheltie makes a first class show dog and has incredible popularity as a companion animal. It seems his skills were easily transferable.
