Description: Emperor penguins face temperatures when they’re breeding of around -4 degrees F. The wind can get up to 47 miles an hour! Brrrr!
Courting takes place in the fall, which is mid May in the Antarctic. The female lays one egg on the ice, when the males begin to brood by holding the egg on his feet for two months. (There’s a special fold of skin that goes over the egg to keep it warm.) Why does just the dad get saddled with this job? Perhaps it was in the marriage pre-nuptials. Anyway, once the egg hatches both parents feed the chicks throughout the rest of the winter and spring.
Questions arise. Why raise the kids during the harshest time of the year? There actually is a good reason. If they bred in the summer they wouldn’t get the chick raised before the winter. That way the babies have the best chance of surviving. It’s always about what’s best for the kids, isn’t it? And with good reason. There’s really not another way to survive into the future without paying some attention to the rearing of the youngsters. Makes me think of a few human parents who could take a hint from the penguins.
Every time I wear my sterling silver penguin pin pendant I think about how marvelous these birds are!
