Description: One of the most spectacular of the cockatoo family to me is the Leadbeater’s cockatoo. I’ve made one or two of these in the brilliantly colored clay before as custom orders . That flame- colored crest reminds me of a tribal chief of some kind. They were always a challenge to make, but the result was usually worth it.
Leadbeater’s cockatoo is also known as Major Mitchell’s cockatoo. There must be a story behind that one! I picture these two crusty British explorers having a tiff over who discovered this gorgeous bird first. The only solution seemed to be to name it after both of them, just to end the feud. You must realize that I’m just making this up.
While I’m on the subject, here’s a little more data about this bird. They live in arid country, often close to a water source. They live in either pairs or small family flocks and nest for the most part in red gum trees. They are from the interior of the great continent of Australia.
To keep them as a pet requires a large aviary. If they are bred in captivity they can become very tame, but are not among the best talkers of their kind.
Wear a beautiful sterling silver cockatoo pin pendant to express your affection for this glorious species of parrot.
