Description: New World monkeys, of which the model for my monkey pendant is a member, live in the rainforests in Central and South America. One thing that distinguishes them from other primates is the nose. The nostrils are wider apart, and they point sideways. Another thing that is unique to these primates is the fact that their thumbs are not really opposable. In fact, many of this group can grab objects just as easily between their other fingers. One of the most dramatic physical things you notice about them is the prehensile tail. They are the only primates that have them. So just think, before Europeans discovered the New World, they’d never seen the image of a monkey swinging from his tail! That’s interesting to me because now that’s what many people imagine when they think of a monkey. Scientists are puzzled with how these monkeys got over here in the first place. Their first fossil remains are found to be about 35 million years old. And South America was already separated from Africa by then. Oh the mysteries of the animal kingdom! (That reminds me to remind you to see the dramatic sterling silver rhinoceros pendant and others at 925 silver wildlife pendants.) I wouldn’t worry about it.
