Description: I started designing rhinos a while back, and like I often do when I’m creating wildlife jewelry of animals I’m especially fond of, I got a little carried away. I do hope you enjoy my efforts!
There are a lot of interesting facts about these big lumbering animals.
The horn itself is created from nose fibers secreted from the skin of the nose and then cemented together. There are some rhinos that grow as many as three horns, but that is a bit unusual. The record length for a black rhino horn was over 50 inches and for a white rhino horn over 60 inches. The black rhino is still the most abundant species of rhinos, but even they have been reduced to only 15,000 animals. My source is a few years out of date, so hopefully those numbers have changed in the right direction since then.
Rhinos are quite territorial. Subordinate rhinos are tolerated by the “big cheese” as long as they are submissive to him. I suppose when you have a body that looks like a rhino, it would be ludicrous to tip toe around and not act at least a little macho once in a while.
The sterling silver rhino pendant is my nod to the massive beast that needs some attention and care from us humans for its continuing survival.
Another favorite of mine is the facing giraffe sterling silver pendant - part of the group you'll find at favorite wildlife pendants in sterling silver.
