Description: I have seen them on occasion, and they always make me smile with that unusual ambling gait that doesn’t look like any other animal’s walk. Older female possums tend to have fewer babies than the younger moms. That is as it should be. It must be hard enough to go chasing after all those babies when they decide to leave the pouch and explore the world on their own. When mama possum is ready to wean her babies, she lets them follow her around as she forages. Prior to that, they are often left in a nest when she goes looking for food. When the Virginia possum’s babies are about 70 days of age, they leave the pouch. There seem to be some talking back and forth between babies and their mothers, sort of clicking sounds that mean something that only they can understand. In short order the babies are on their own and have to fend for themselves. Possums live to be about two years of age. It seems odd to me that they have such a short live span. A while ago some possum rescue type folks told me that and I was shocked! Maybe the world would be overrun with possums otherwise. This is a small sterling silver possum pendant, right for anyone who wants a gentle reminder to the world to think about these interesting marsupial residents once in a while.
