Description: I’ve been doing a bit of possum research, and finding out about the possums that I hardly ever think about, and have only been dimly aware of up to this time. That, my friend, are the possums of our friends in South America! Possums seem to have different breeding seasons depending on their location, but in general mating takes place so the young will be leaving the pouch when the most food is available for them. Tropical possums breed when it’s dry and that way the babies are emerging from the pouch during the rainy season when there is more food around. (I do have a baby possum as a silver pendant, too.) Possums don’t have much of an elaborate courtship. No roses, no candlelit meals. Just a lot of clicking sounds as the male approaches, kind of a possum version of “Hey, baby.” If the female isn’t receptive, she just avoids contact or maybe she’ll hiss at him. Here’s a strange little bit of information about our very own Virginia possum. She may have as many as 56 young! It’s impossible for her to feed that many as she doesn’t have the equipment, but it’s just a case of nature making sure there’s enough possums to go around.
