Description: I have a picture in one of my animal books of a koala bear in the top of a telephone pole. Maybe he just got sick of the old homestead (the eucalyptus tree). Koalas have fairly small eyes, a little on the beady side. The pupil is vertical, like a cat’s eye. Their fur is an ash color with just a hint of brown on the upper part of the body. The rear end is yellowish. Their snout is kind of hard looking and is black. I don’t know if it really is hard, but it just looks that way to me. They are said to have annoying voices, something like a handsaw cutting wood. They have the dubious honor of having possibly the loudest voice of all the Australian animals. There are “races” of koalas that favor one type of Eucalyptus leaf over another. They can eat things other than the eucalyptus, but without them in their diet they would die of starvation. Because koalas are so slow moving, they are easily trapped by forest fires, just another problem for an animal already endangered. Luckily for the koala, their pelts are no longer a desirable commodity, as they were in the 1920s.
