Description: The African elephant, which is the group my little silver pendant is representative of, lives in Africa south of the Sahara desert. The male is between 20 and 24 feet long and the female is about 2 feet shorter. They have a sparse amount of hair on their bodies, more when they’re babies, which I find especially charming. They are long lived, up to 80 years in captivity. They don’t live quite as long in the wild, but perhaps would if there weren’t so many clueless people killing them for their tusks. A friend of mine from South Africa told me a story of a person she knew who had a private elephant reserve. He was such a friend of these pachyderms that when a new baby was born the herd brought it to him to meet. Anyway, that’s the story Jane told me and she is not the kind of person to make stuff like this up! The elephant’s most incredible feature, the tusks, are actually elongated incisor teeth. They appear in the second year and grow throughout the elephant’s life. The tusks of the male are much larger than that of the cow-132 pounds as compared to 20 pounds each.
