Description: Recently I received an order for a set of armadillo jewelry from a lady in Europe. Not an American living in Europe, but a real live European! I was flattered that she was so interested in our little grey illegal immigrant.
It’s true, they have been here since the latter part of the 19th century when they decided they needed a change of pace and swam across the Rio Grande. They’ve been alternately amusing and annoying us ever since.
The word armadillo comes from the Spanish word that means “one that is armed.” The armor on an armadillo is made up of bone and horny skin. Armadillos defend themselves from predators with claws that are rather sharp. But mostly they just run away. One of my customers told me about her husband, a veterinarian, who caught an armadillo in their yard. The poor little thing was so frightened that he started salivating copious amounts. I’ve heard that before. Maybe they think the “predator” will get grossed out and drop them.
In some cultures the armadillo is eaten and his armor made into baskets. Apparently hunting these guys hasn’t made a dent in the armadillo population it’s probably more like pruning a rose and getting even more buds.
Better to wear a silver armadillo pendant than to eat him, I always say!
See him as a facing armadillo pendant in sterling silver or stroll over to all sterling silver wildlife pendants.
