Description: Ferrets are fairly long lived pets, anywhere from about 6 to 10 years. I have heard of them living longer but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Ferrets, as members of the muscalid family, do have an odor all their own. The males supposedly have the strongest smell, especially if they haven’t been neutered. I’d think that the prospective ferret owner would certainly want to check out this aspect of ferret ownership before committing. The thing is, even if you remove the musk glands they still retain a musky odor from other places on the ferret’s body. Seems to me if you can’t live with the odor then a ferret just isn’t the pet for you! Best to stay with a dog, cat or a rabbit.
