Description: Speaking of nibbles, I just read somewhere that if you make a habit of feeding your rat through the cage bars, he may occasionally nip you by accident. It may be he mistook your finger for a bite of food. The author suggested that when you are giving him food in this manner that you simultaneously give him a command he’ll come to understand such as “don’t bite!” or some such. It’s not a good idea to try to separate rats that are having a fight by using your hands. You could try the rat equivalent of throwing a pot of cold water on a couple of fighting cats by spraying them with some water then putting them in separate cages for a while. There are some organizations that take in rats that have been neglected and work to find new homes for them. That’s certainly a good way to get a pet rat, although you won’t know what his parents were like which theoretically could be problematic.
