Description: Turtles are appealing animals, and I always am excited to see one on a hike. We have gopher tortoises here in Florida. They’re big lumbering charcoal grey reptiles that pretty much ignore their human admirers, such as me and my hiking entourage. Generally it seems like most people have a friendly attitude towards turtles. They are slow moving and they live a long time. Some perhaps close to 200 years. They have been kept as pets for years, and unfortunately sometimes eaten. Their shell are beautiful and have been used in the past to make combs and other lovely objects. Although some may be endangered, there are a lot of turtles that are surviving well and will continue to adorn our planet for many years to come. One lovely little turtle I’d love to see in person is the Indian Roofed turtle. It lives in quiet waters in ponds and streams all the way from Pakistan to India and Bangladesh. Oddly enough, not a lot is known about its habits even though it is a very common turtle. A sterling silver turtle pendant is a nice reminder of a charming little reptile that mostly has a great reputation among most of us humans, and for good reason!
