Description: Wouldn’t it be fun to have these chameleons running around the environment outside scarfing up bugs with their thick sticky tongues? I guess I’ll just have to wait for a trip to Africa or Madagascar. Chameleons are naturals at changing color. How they pull this off is not entirely known. What is known is that they have specialized color cells under their transparent skin. There are four layers of these cells. It is a rather complicated business, so I’ll just let it go at that. Have you seen the dinosaurish looking Jackson’s chameleon? It uses its horns to have jousting tournaments with other males. The females don’t have these impressive appendages, just one little spike on the snout. They get to be about 14 inches long and are native to eastern Africa. The species I’ve based my design on is the veiled chameleon, which lives in Yemen and southwest Saudi Arabia. They live in an extremely hot and dry climate, lending some to believe that the reason for the elaborate helmet on their head is conducting moisture that has condensed to the mouth. I have a picture of a veiled chameleon baby with a miniature little helmet riding on his parent’s back. Pretty cute!
