Description: Bearded dragons are supposedly a good choice for a pet lizard for the beginner. They do require a large cage that has a hot spot. Also, add dead branches that the lizard can perch and bask on. The temperature needs to be hot during the day and cooler at night, matching the variations in temperature that occur in its native habitat. (Of course you have to refer to a book on lizard care to get the details on its care.) Beardies will become pretty tame if treated well and sometimes take the food right from your hand. Their favorite food is really big bugs, like crickets and locusts. I think I might be tempted to forgo the feeding by hand thing. But all is not lost, for they also eat some vegetable matter, especially dandelion leaves and flowers. That I could handle! The two sexes look pretty much alike. My reference states that if you are interested in breeding them you should purchase a bunch (like three or four) baby lizards and just cross your fingers that they’re different sexes. When they grow up, the behavior between the sexes changes as the males become more dominant. There’s no problem with the boys fighting if they’ve been raised together and the cage is big enough.
