Description: It would be interesting to know what the world looks like through the perspective of a manatee. They spend their lives in water, but have more concept of life on the land than a dolphin or whale. Most of their feeding is done underwater, but sometimes they “stand” in the water and munch on the greenery that grows just outside their watery home. They have some contact with humans, some of it kindly as in parts of Florida and the West Indies where they’re offered food. But their eyesight is not exactly keen, and I would imagine their concept of the world outside the watery familiar one is somewhat limited. I think of them as happy to loll about with their fellows, comfortable in their bulk and thinking mostly of their next meal. I’ll bet that manatees make wonderful mothers. They look plump and good natured. I doubt if manatee babies get the sea mammal equivalent of the paddle too often. They are slow breeders, only one calf every two years or so. The babies aren’t weaned for about 18 months, so mama and baby have a lot of time to bond, and she has almost 2 years to show her little one all the manatee ropes. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little symbol of a favorite animal for a keepsake. My little silver manatee pendant would be a lovely way to think of this sweet creature now and again. I have a pretty dolphin pendant in sterling and a sterling silver marine animal pendant section started. |
