Description: Sirenians (the group that our manatee in Florida belongs to) don’t have much competition for food. The only other animal that eats from the same sea grass is the sea turtle. A lot of the food the manatees actually consume is the “root” of the sea grass, which is actually a rhizome. The turtles are more interested in the sea grass blades. The manatees we have in this state can tolerate both salt and freshwater, but the Amazonian manatees can only survive in the freshwater of the Amazon. Another interesting fact about this sea animal is it only has six neck vertebrae. All other mammals have seven. Even though manatees have very tiny external openings for their ears, they actually have excellent hearing. This is what saves them from hunters. Unlike dolphins or whales, they don’t have echolocation to guide them through their murky underwater environment, and they sometimes bump into things. They also don’t have vocal chords, but somehow are able to communicate by high pitched sounds. No one knows how they manage this!
