Description: I was just reading about a particular breed of semi- wild sheep that lives off the coast of Scotland and has been there since prehistoric times. It’s called the Soay sheep, and is believed to have been kept by Neolithic farmers. I wonder if they miss being herded by those ancient people, and always sort of feel that something is missing in their lives? I have these flights of whimsy sometimes.
It seems that wool bearing sheep are somewhat of a later “invention”, only developed since the Bronze Age. More primitive breeds are plucked (ouch!) instead of shorn. Either that, or the wool has to be collected on the pasture where the sheep are kept after it has been shed by them.
In England there are special names assigned to sheep depending on how they react as part of the flock. A sheep that tends to roam from the flock is called an “outlier”. One of the reasons it does this is because it has trouble getting enough to eat when it’s with the rest of the flock due to illness or weakness of some kind. Of course, a sheep in this situation is subject to attack by a predator. The “bellwether” is the sheep that follows an outlier and lets the others know they can safely follow.
There you have a few interesting sheep facts to ponder.
