Description: Chickens delight me. They seem somehow self important and the roosters a little arrogant. I’m sure this is just whimsy, but I like to entertain myself. The origination of the term “pecking order” came from farmyard observation. Hens that are unfamiliar to each other will pair off and fight to find out which one will hold the dominant position. It’s actually a little more complex than that, with whole groups of hens being either dominant or subordinate depending on their ability to fight or not. It may just be their version of an election. I just saw a photograph of a chicken called the long tailed Yokohama. This rooster has a tail 20 feet long. Yes, I said feet. How on earth did they ever isolate such a gene? It is a spectacular looking bird. Maybe they come in all sorts of colors, but the one in my book is white, giving the impression of an embarrassed bride with an awkwardly long and wrinkled train. There are other breeds of domestic fowl that have spectacular colors or other odd ornamental accruements. It seems like it would be rather uncomfortable for the bird to go through life weighed down by useless feathers, but I suppose they get used to it.
