Description: This dog was bred in the 1800s to be a really ferocious fighting dog that men bet on. He was known as a courageous dog that never backed down from a fight. We think now that this was a nasty sport with sadistic overtones to it, but elsewhere I’ve heard it spoken of as a sport that men enjoyed because it upheld values of courage and valor. That seems hard to believe now, but times do change and the early part of this century was a rough and tumble world. The modern day American Staffordshire terrier that has been bred by an ethical breeder is a tractable dog that is docile and quite trainable. He or she is still powerfully built, but the aggressive nature of the fighting dog should be absent in the family pet altogether. I know this must be true because I know quite a few young women in the veterinary technician profession that own pit bulls and tell me how sweet they are. I don’t think these women would want to live with a dog that had anything but a docile nature.
