Description: In one of my reference books the lab is referred to as being a dog that can “swim like a fish.” That seems an apt description of a breed that enjoys the cold ocean like a member of the polar bear club (a group of human beings that makes it a habit of immersing themselves in freezing water whenever possible). These dogs are said to retrieve the pheasant and bring it to the hunter with the care and grace of someone delicately conveying an invaluable porcelain vase across the room, even at a full gallop! While the men on the shore were handling the fish in the first net, the labs swam back towards the boat to wait for another net full of fish to be thrown into the water and the whole thing was repeated. They also had a lot of experience going overboard to retrieve objects thrown or otherwise lost over board by the fishermen- thus began their work as retrievers!
