Description: Everything I have read about these dogs has been favorable. One thing I just came across that was especially intriguing was the way that certain Great Danes escort visitors to the house. The hand of the visitor is gently taken in the mouth of the Great Dane and the person is led to his master. This sounds like something out of a movie! It would certainly be something to see. On ancient Greek coins there sometimes is found a dog that looks suspiciously like the Great Dane. These coins are over 2,000 years old. In the Middle Ages the ancestor of the Great Dane was considered something of a status symbol. He was often found in the homes of Noblemen and the Royalty of the day. Incidentally the reason their ears were initially cropped was to avoid them being torn when they were chasing wild boar, stags and wolves. It’s thought that the first Dane like dogs were brought over to the Mediterranean countries by Phoenician traders. The Great Dane is naturally a kindly soul, but because it is so large, it should be trained well if it’s to be an effective guard dog. This is best done at an early age. Another dog common in the Middle Ages was the greyhound. You can see my larger greyhound silver pendant and other breeds of dog pendants cast in silver by clicking these links. |
