I’ve read often about how the color of the butterfly is made of a series of overlapping scales, but this morning I found a picture of that in one of my animal encyclopedia books. It is amazing! The close up looks like the photograph of some kind of exotic and multi colored snake skin. Most definitely shaped like scales, although never before could I totally picture what they were talking about when they mentioned them. No wonder they look great as butterfly pendants or necklaces.

It’s good to get that straight! Actually, just above the photograph are some drawings that show the different shapes that the scales can come in. They are very odd, and nothing I ever would’ve thought of as being scales. One of them looks a little like a boat paddle, and another one is shaped like the exotic stamen of a flower. Strange stuff! I think butterflies are such magical insects, anyway. Just the fact that people are so fond of them yet they are insects is magical in itself.

This sterling silver butterfly pendant was designed by yours truly as I gazed out my back window on a spring day. This one doesn’t particularly resemble any of the Florida butterflies I’ve seen, but is a representative design meant to evoke a bit of them all!
