Description: A flying sterling silver bald eagle design really captured my imagination. I’d seen a photograph of this incredible bird soaring above a body of water and I knew that was how my pendant should look. The size is just a hair over an inch wide. I’m so glad that the bald eagle has made a comeback. It was on the endangered list when DDT was damaging their ability to reproduce, but now they seem to be in greater abundance than they’ve been in years. I even saw one not all that long ago in my neighborhood! Did you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the symbol of the United States rather than the bald eagle? I love wild turkeys, but I think the bald eagle has a prouder countenance. I’m glad our forefathers went with the big bird of prey. Bald eagles mate for life, and even rebuild the same nest year after year. There’s something very homey about that. Something a mom and grandmother like me would appreciate. Bald eagles are in the fish eagle group, and are, of course skilled fishers. Before I read that, I had no idea what they preyed upon. They also are carrion eaters, which is what Benjamin Franklin was objecting to, I suppose. This sterling silver bald eagle pendant is one of my most delicate designs. I really wanted to give the impression of flight, which is, after all a pretty delicate operation. The bald eagle doesn’t weigh very much, having hollow bones like all birds.
