Description: Cockatoos fascinate me. I’ve been reading about them lately and I’ve discovered a few interesting facts. I figured they were mostly vegetarian eaters, but some of them, like the black palm cockatoo, will enjoy a grub as a special treat. They also eat seeds and fruit, even the fruit of certain palms that have shells so thick that they can only otherwise be opened by cracking them with repeatedly striking them with an axe! Watch those fingers boys and girls. Many cockatoos breed in colonies and others are more the loner type. They nest in hollow trees, holes in a cliff and some, like the corella, use a termite mound hole. They line the hole with leaves or other material where the 4 or 5 eggs are laid. Mama and Papa both incubate the eggs and feed the newly hatched babies until they can fly. There’s nothing quite as endearingly silly looking as a young baby cockatoo with all those spiky little pin feathers sticking out every which way! A baby only a mother (or a bird breeder) could love! I once considered designing a baby parrot at just that stage, but I’m not sure how much call there would be for it. Do let me know if you think it would be something of interest to “bird people.” My sterling silver cockatoo pendant is just waiting here at the Magic Zoo for a new home!
