Description: Giraffes have a mysteriously large voice box for an animal that hardly anyone has ever heard make a sound. The baby giraffe may call his mama bleating like a calf. The adult female and the adult male may make very rare sounds every great once in a while. But none of these vocalizations seem to warrant the size of the voice box. Is it possible they are making sounds that are below the ability of the human ear to detect? There is a theory that this may be the case. The mother-calf bond in the giraffe hasn’t been observed to be as strong as between the parent and young of some other species of animals. Maybe they talk to each other in some mysterious way with that mysterious voice box, who knows? At any rate the babies are born after about 440 days of gestation, plus or minus a week or so in either direction. I’ve seen footage of the baby giraffe falling from the standing mother all the way to the hard ground. What a way to come into the world! Giraffes have their way, and we have ours.
