Description: The nine banded armadillo, of which this pair of silver earrings is representative, is a bit of an anomaly. While many other species of armadillo are declining, the common, or 9 banded one is increasing its range. It’s not like it has no predators or anything like that. Maybe it’s just lucky!
Armadillos make characteristic grunting noises when they’re hunting for insects. The only other sounds they’ve been heard to make is a sniffling one and occasionally when they get into a fight, a loud armadillo yell.
An armadillo loves a good meal of ants or termites. They stick their long tongue into the nest and bring it out covered with insects. Mmm good! They can also make short work of snakes, worms, snails and some veggies.
There’s one kind of armadillo called the fairy armadillo that is quite endangered due to habitat loss. It doesn’t live in the USA. To me it looks a bit like a prehistoric caterpillar and it’s hard to tell which is the front end and which is the back.
My sterling silver armadillo earrings are, of course, of the nine banded sort. Hope you like ‘em! There is another Texas critter to see in my silver bat earring design and other wildlife in my sterling silver wildlife earring gifts section.
