Description: I think the elephant must be the most magnificent land mammal. From what I’ve read, they have quite a society that must be respected for them to lead happy lives. After mating takes place, the baby is born in about 700 days, sometimes sooner. The birth is almost always a single one, with the calf weighing close to 200 pounds. Traditionally the birth is attended by a midwife elephant. All the young elephants stay with the herd until the teen years. I saw a show on Animal Planet a few months ago about some truly juvenile delinquent elephants that were behaving very badly and causing a lot of damage. It was discovered that these young elephants were not afforded the opportunity to be educated by the elephant elders like they were supposed to be. They had no elephant etiquette reference, either because their mothers were killed by poachers or they had been separated from the herd for some other reason. That sounded familiar, as well as very sad. But there was a pretty good ending because as I recall they found these “kids” an elephant mentor who took them under his trunk and let them know what they needed to know to be good elephant citizens. Animals are complex and definitely to be respected. This was a good example of that.
