Description: Yes, I realize they can be quite large, and they aren’t really cuddly (except probably to each other). But I find them wonderfully appealing. Unfortunately they are also endangered animals. The more people can be made aware of their plight, the more chance they have of surviving into the future.
Manatee females usually come into season at the peak of the food supply, especially in the Amazon. This means, of course, that a whole lot of manatee babies are born at about the same time. Not a lot is known about the courting process, but a female manatee usually is accompanied by 6 or 8 males. Hopefully that makes up for the long months ahead with no male companionship!
Manatees are essentially solitary animals, except once in a while when they form groups of about 12 animals. These groupings may just be related to the presence of food or warm water. But they seem to enjoy each other’s company, “kissing” and taking part in other physical contact.
Cows and their calves often seem to have conversations, communicating by means of grunts, whines or squeals. Usually these sounds are heard when the two have been separated temporarily or the baby is wanting to nurse.
I hope these shiny sterling silver manatee earrings make many manatee fans happy!
