Description: Dolphins are remarkable mammals, and I think the ancients were aware of this as well. I have seen examples of artwork representing dolphins on the walls of an ancient temple in one of my books, but I just can’t place the culture at the moment! It seems hard to believe now, but not all that long ago it was thought that whales, dolphins and porpoises made no sound. In the 1950s when dolphin began to be kept in captivity, it was discovered that they have a whole language. At one point it was suggested that the dolphin were trying to imitate human speech. That theory went out the window, and seems kind of chauvinistic in retrospect. (I’m using that term loosely, to mean that humans assuming that dolphins wouldn’t have their own language but were trying to imitate ours is a bit degrading to the dolphins.) Dolphins create sound by the air released from the blowhole when they’re submerged. You can actually see the bubbles being released in a stream. Way back in the first century AD Pliny, the Roman naturalist was aware of this phenomena! He certainly had powers of observation.
