It seems that all breeds exhibit this so it must have proven to be a survival mechanism for the species at some dim point in the past. Sheep spend their days grazing and resting. If the weather is hot, they graze longer at night, which makes sense. Here’s something that proves that sheep can have the opposite effect on the land than their relatives the goats. Whereas goats tend to leave the land bare and open to erosion, sheep improve soil fertility. This is especially important and helpful on sandy and otherwise poor soil.
