Description: Pigs are the domesticated farm animal that comes from stock of intelligence and cunning. I think that wild boar have a majestic and noble quality that isn’t really there in the wild goat or the sheep. Not that these aren’t also wonderful animals. I have a feeling there is something about the pig that actually has to be ignored in order for people to slaughter them for the table. Maybe long ago they were sacrificial animals that at least died for a higher calling than a ham and swiss on rye. The Native Americans had the right idea when they killed an animal for its meat and hide. The animal was thanked and honored. I think a little more of that appreciation for the animals that feed and clothe us would be refreshing! If you love animals, it’s hard not to have some sympathy for the ones that end up on the dining room table. I’m not sure when pigs as an item of ornamentation gained popularity. Maybe ancient people wore jewelry with the image of animals, but I don’t know if the hog was one of the ones depicted. Oh well, no time like the present, I say! I even made silver sheep earrings and other silver farm animal earring gifts. Wear a pretty little pig accessory, possibly even my sterling silver pig earrings! |
