Description: Cows and bulls have a long and venerable history with the doings of mankind. There were bull cults in the Minoan Crete culture, with sports that involved young athletic women grabbing the horns of a charging bull, and doing a handspring over its back! I have a photo of a fresco from 1500 BC depicting this exciting and dangerous sport. It’s thought that the women who took part in this may have been princesses! My, but times have changed. Modern cattle in the West are about 5 feet tall and weigh from 1,000 to 2,200 pounds. The bulls, of course, are heavier than the cows. They graze on grass and eat about 150 pounds of grass a day. That seems like an awful lot of food for one day! Wouldn’t that be the equivalent of a 150 pound person consuming about 25 pounds of food in a day? I’m no math wizard (that’s for sure) but I think that’s about right. Cows are basically eating machines. At around the age of two, cows are mature. Here’s something I didn’t know. Now I’m really about to flaunt my ignorance. This book tells me that heifer is the name for a cow before it has produced a calf. I always thought a heifer was a breed of cow, a reddish cow specifically. Please stop laughing. I’ll make sterling silver cow earrings, and you can know about, raise and doctor the cows!
