Description: The original Westie were the odd white dog in the cairn terrier litter, and not particularly looked on with kindness. They had always cropped up from time to time. Over 300 years ago James I sent for six little white dogs to be sent to the King of France, so at least for a period of time earlier in their history they were considered special. There came a family that felt the white dogs had merit as they were easy to see against the rocks and plants of the Highlands as their color didn’t merge with the background. The family was named Malcolm, and they worked hard to eliminate the colored dogs from their strain and just breed the white ones. At last the white dogs were established as a separate breed. Judges at dog shows have always liked the Westie, and they have won may honors on the show bench over the years. It is also a wonderful pet. Although the Westie is not timid, it rarely starts fights. It is still a very hardy little dog but also gets along well in a suburban setting.
