Description: One of the skills of the Weimaraner, I just learned, was to hunt wolves! That is almost unimaginable to me! It is a very difficult image to imagine a sophisticated and gentlemanly dog chasing after his wolf cousin. I don’t know what the Weimaraner would do with the wolf once he caught up with him. Perhaps he just held the wolf at bay and the hunter finished him off. Not a pretty picture, but it was certainly a different time. The poor wolf wasn’t looked at in very good terms in 19th century Germany, it seems. The mother Weimaraner gives birth to anywhere from five to seven puppies per litter. The puppies should begin socializing with people when they are about seven weeks old. By the time they are between five and eight months old their training should begin. I imagine it’s easier to start training them before they get much older- get those good habits established early on. Any lack of training can end you up with an aggressive dog that is impossible! So this is something that definitely seems important with this particular breed. Besides, it must be rewarding to see these puppies develop and begin to form personalities that can be molded in the right direction.
