There are various theories as to their appearance in China in the first place, but one early reference to the dog mentions that the Dalai Lama of Tibet gave some of the temple dogs (Llasa Apsos) to the Chinese rulers. Gave? Maybe. I guess it was later on that the Chinese lost all respect for the position of this holy Buddhist leader. But I digress! The dogs were pretty isolated in the Forbidden City, and their viability would have been in question except for the fact that they were bred to the Pekingnese.
