Shorthaired cats are easy to care for with just an occasional combing. They are usually good natured and get along well with other animals. Of course, there are always exceptions! We had a temperamental tabby cat for quite a few years but of course we adored her anyway.

To be honest, I never really thought of short haired cats as being a particular breed with a particular personality, but I have learned a lot about these cats and find that they do have their own set of specialized personality traits. They are considered “working cats” and have an excellent reputation as a mouser. Even when these cats aren’t particularly required to hunt, (that is, when their food is provided) they exercise their ability in this area.

Most of the cats that find their way into our “very attractive to cats for some unknown reason” back yard are short hairs. Currently a very elegant black tom with a collar has taken to snoozing away the afternoon under the shade of our largest mango tree. I enjoy looking out the studio window and watching the comings and goings of the visiting felines. The only time I worried was when I had a beautiful little bright red summer tanager visiting us for a few days, but he managed to survive feline attention and continued on his journey north unmolested.
