Description: Although we usually think of the owls as being active at night, there is one known as the Burrowing owl that even sunbathes! There are also several species of fishing owls that hunt by day. Now that’s something I’d love to be a witness to! I wonder if they still have those big nocturnal eyes one usually associates with the night hunters. Owls are busy while the majority of the avian world is roosting. They have to hunt and make sure nobody interlopes on their territory. They court by night and bring their little night owlets dinner home. Owls are good at making the best of low light. In fact, it’s been said that they can see as well at night as we do by day. That’s a hard concept to wrap my wits around, but all power to them! They also have highly developed hearing. One theory about their silent flight is that not only is that an excellent way to sneak up on their prey, but their sensitive hearing isn’t interrupted by the sound of their feathers while they’re in flight. The softness of the outer feathers probably has something to do with the noise reduction factor. Owl earrings in sterling silver are not only unusual, but quiet as well.
