Possum CharmOur Price: $27.00 Summary: I just had to design this sterling silver possum charm hanging from its tail. He has a little smile on his face so I suppose he’s having fun. |

Description: Most all of the possum family is adept at climbing. Their feet all have five “fingers” and on the hind feet, the “big toe” is actually opposable. I think this probably gives the possum a good grip on anything it may be climbing, most likely a tree. Their prehensile tails are mostly used to assist them when they climb. Possums, especially the Virginia possums, vary their diet somewhat depending on what’s available. I suppose you could call them omnivores. In tropical Peru the Southern opossum climbs extremely high to feed on flowers and nectar when not a lot else is available. There’s even a possum that’s adapted to an aquatic life style. It has webbed hind feet so that opposable digit is not so opposable with this species. The name of this possum is the yapok. They are mostly carnivores, making their living as fisher- possums. Their diet is mostly crustaceans and fish. This kind of possum doesn’t climb much, although they are able to. Their tail isn’t prehensile like that of their cousins. Their pouch is rear opening, and when they dive water cannot get into it. My possum, however, is just the non exotic Virginia possum, at least to those of us who know and love it. I think it makes a very worthy sterling silver charm. In contrast you might look at a silver charm of a monkey sitting down and many others under silver wildlife charms. |
