Description: Rabbits are polygamous, one buck (male) mating with several different does. Each female has her own territory in the warren itself. They do have a lot of babies! In fact, one right after the other all the way from January to June, with only a month in between births. Talk about a stair step kids! Not only that, but they continue to make babies sporadically for the rest of the year as well. Give it a rest, guys and girls! Now I totally understand how entire countries can be overrun with these guys.
The rabbit about to give birth makes a soft little bed for her and her newborn rabbits out of hay with the lining made from her own fur. Sounds pretty soft, all right! Her “place” is at the end of a short burrow which is not close to the main burrow. Apparently this is necessary so the buck won’t kill the babies. That is domestic violence that I’d never expect from a rabbit.
This is hard to grasp, but the mom only nurses her young for about 3 minutes in a 24 hour period. Why that’s nothing, talk to a new human mom! Every time she visits her babies, she has to close up the entrance with earth and dried grass to hide it. Now how in the world did someone find all this out?
